Regional Kai Resilience Hui, Food Forest Tour and Ōmanawa Falls

Nau mai, haere mai—welcome to the Regional Kai Resilience Network Hui in Ōmanawa! This special gathering was designed to bring together passionate individuals and communities dedicated to strengthening food resilience and fostering deeper connections through shared knowledge, time, and resources.
The hui provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the next steps in creating a “Kai Resilient and Connected Community”—one that is equipped to grow, sustain, and share food in ways that are regenerative, collaborative, and culturally grounded.
As part of the day’s activities, attendees were privileged to tour a Syntropic Agroforestry Food Forest in Ōmanawa. This immersive experience offered insights into how diverse food systems can be designed in harmony with natural ecosystems, enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and long-term productivity. Following the tour, we gathered for a hui, where ideas, experiences, and aspirations were shared, strengthening our collective vision for a resilient future.
To conclude the day, we enjoyed a shared lunch at the breathtaking Ōmanawa Falls, a moment to connect further over nourishing kai and conversation. The delicious meal was prepared and served by the talented rangatahi of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Kura Kokiri, whose efforts are part of an important fundraising initiative. The $15 contribution for lunch directly supports their journey to Te Wai Pounamu, helping them experience new learning opportunities and cultural exchanges.
This hui was more than just an event—it was a step toward building a stronger, more connected, and food-secure future for all. Ngā mihi nui to everyone who participated, shared their knowledge, and contributed to the kaupapa.
